As we celebrate Memorial Day, we pay tribute to the men and women who have lost their lives in service to our country.   Amongst the activities that fill the first “official” weekend of summer, may you remember that there is a cost for the freedom we enjoy in these United States.  We are grateful to the men and women who were willing to pay the ultimate price.

To date, glassybaby has donated more than $78,000 to the VA Puget Sound Health Care System to support the health care needs of veterans.

After several months of hard work, we are excited to finally be launching our drinkers with a whole new theme of names, revolving around actual beverages and drink components.  May we present to you ‘drink deep.’

Over the years, people started using their glassybaby in more ways than one.  Aside from lighting them, customers, staff included, began drinking out of their glassybaby collections.  And so, the drinker was born.  Lee’s oldest son, Hector, wrote the perfect description of the drinker and how it came to be.

Long before the arrival of the drinker, Lee had always wanted to give back to the Department of Veterans Affairs. Having visited several times, she saw how underfunded they were and she wanted to help in a big way. From the day they were born, back in 2008, 10 percent from the sale of every, single drinker is donated to the Department of Veteran Affairs to support the basic daily health needs of our veterans.  Giving is the core mission at glassybaby, so it has been so rewarding for us to be involved with such an incredible organization.

The drinker can be used with both warm and cool liquids and can be rinsed in the top shelf of your dishwasher (although we recommend hand washing ). Like their glassybaby sibling, each and every drinker is hand blown with three layers of glass by our talented glass artists. With names ranging from ‘moo’ to ‘fresh squeezed’ to ‘fizz’ to ‘crème de cassis,’ and a variety of sets, there’s a drinker for everyone in your life.  We’re ready for you to peek through our entire collection, so come check them out!

remembering company charlie

A few months ago, a woman came into the Bellevue store to purchase a couple of drinkers.  When I noticed that she was only looking at the charlie drinker, I told her it was one of my favorites, and also the first drinker I had ever purchased.  She told me that she loves its name, “charlie,” and keeps returning to the store to buy more.  She explained that her brother, who had served in “Company Charlie,”  had recently been killed in the line of duty in Iraq.  To her brother’s family and friends, this drinker now serves as something so much more than a glass.  It is a commemorative piece that they all own.  She also loves that 10%  from the sale of each drinker is donated to the Seattle Division of V.A. Puget Sound to support veterans who are battling cancer.  This Fourth of July, we imagine that you will be raising your charlie drinkers in remembrance.  At glassybaby, we gratefully acknowledge the cost of our freedom as we join you, your friends, and family, and celebrate your brother and those who have bravely served our country.
